Active Travel Crew

We are a group of pupils in Year 6 who are interested in promoting active travel.

What do we do?

As Active Travel Crew, we have given ourselves the following job description …

  • Promote Active Travel
  • Arrange fun  activities every half term to encourage active travel
  • Deliver assemblies to promote active travel
  • Be good active travel role models through walking, scooting and cycling to school.

When do we meet?

We meet every other week to plan, create and develop our ideas.

What kind of events do we arrange ?

  • We arrange events such as Dr Bike, Bling your Bike, Be Bright Be Seen Fashion Show, Bike Bus Rides and Bike It Breakfasts.
  • We deliver assemblies to encourage active travel and we have taken part in bicycle maintenance workshops to improve our own cycle skills.
  • We work closely with Mrs Brown and Abi Roberts from Sustrans.
  • Every year our school participates in the Big Walk and Wheel challenge, Walk to School Week and Cycle to school week.

How do we raise awareness ?

We raise awareness of active travel through -

  • Social media
  • Events
  • School newsletter
  • Ensure good cycle and scooter storage
  • Awards and prizes for showing great effort in coming to school actively

We are currently working towards our Gold Active Travel School Award - this is awarded to schools who  demonstrate an ongoing commitment to promoting active and sustainable travel over several years , which has led to significant and lasting organisational, cultural and behavioural.

Currently there are only two schools in Wales with this award and we are determined to be the third!

As a thank you for our participation in Sustrans' Big Walk and Wheel, we had a fantastic edisplay of cycling skills from Fusion Extreme, showing us how practice makes perfect.

Whitchurch Primary School's second Bike Bus took place this morning, starting from Whitchurch Tennis Club. Diolch yn fawr to everyone who took part.

4th May 2023: what a fantastic turn out for our Bike It! Breakfast! Thank you to everyone who attended - and a special thanks to the Active Travel Crew, who had an exciting time making smoothies using energy generated by pedalling the bike!

March 2023: The Active Travel Crew have been busy putting spot prizes on bikes and scooters as part of the Big Walk and Wheel.

Diolch yn fawr to everyone who took part in our 'Bling Your Bike of Scooter for Christmas' event. Remember to stay safe and visible on these dark winter evenings!

November 2022: As the clocks have gone back and the nights are drawing in, the Active Travel Crew held a 'Be Bright, Be Seen' Fashion Show, highlighting the importance of being visible to other road users when walking, cycling or scooting to school. Diolch yn fawr to Sustrans for the prizes!

Da iawn to all the children and staff who cycled or scooted to school during Cycle to School Week (10th - 14th October).

Dr. Bike visited the school in September 2022 to check that pupils' bikes are roadworthy, and our Active Travel Crew were thrilled to help.

We were delighted to welcome Lee Waters MS, Deputy Minister for Climate Change, to Whitchurch Primary School in March 2022 to launch the pilot project in North Cardiff lowering the speed limit on the roads to 20mph. He met with members of the Bike It! Crew, the Eco Committee and the School Council, and the children expressed their opinions on the pilot scheme and its likely impact on the environment, road safety and on encouraging more people to walk and cycle.

Bendigedig to everyone who took part in our 'Bling Your Bike or Scooter' event. Stay safe and visible on these dark winter evenings!

Da iawn to all the pupils and staff who cycled or scooted to school during Bike to School Week, 27th September to 1st October.
