April / Ebrill 2024

Outdoor Learning Week

Evelyn in 5SJ presented to her class during Allergy Awareness Week.

Annabel in BT won the city-wide competition to name Tesni the Dragon, and her class enjoyed a visit to Castell Caerdydd where they met Tesni. They discovered that the family who lived in the castle loved animals and created rooms full of beautifully painted animals! They learnt about knights and dressed up in armour!

What a wonderful response to our 'Bring a Plant to School Day', organised by our Eco Committee! Our school grounds look wonderful! Diolch yn fawr to all the parents and grandparents who helped the children with their planting.

A fantastic turnout for our first Bike Bus of the Summer Term.

The Criw Cymraeg was delighted to welcome Welsh artist Rhys Padarn Jones, and loved working with him to paint a new mural for Whitchurch Primary School.

Reception children thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Cefn Mably Farm Park in support of this term's Inquiry. We found out about the farm animals, learnt how to handle and feed them, and took a train ride around the farm

Some of our Year 5 pupils took part in a workshop by the English Speaking Union hosted by Howells School. Da iawn bawb!

International Languages Day Activities: RBM have enjoyed learning about India from Haroon.We painted the Indian flag and learnt to count to 5 in Urdu-shukriya. Year 3 learnt about France, creating our own pieces of Monet and tasting Pain au chocolat, which proved very popular. Year 2 enjoyed some Spanish food, created mosaics inspired by Antoni Gaudi, and even tried flamenco dancing. Year 1 investigated Italy, making pizzas, painting flags, creating mosaics and constructing buildings. We counted in Italian and sang nursery rhymes.

The Year 4 rugby squad represented Whitchurch with pride and determination, thoroughly enjoying the competitive spirit and getting covered in mud along the way! Da iawn bawb! 🏉

Year 6 enjoyed workshops with traditional Welsh storyteller and author Daniel Morden.

Year 4 Immersion Day exploring friction through a variety of experiments!

Year 3 had so much fun on their Tuning In Day investigating 'Marvellous Materials'. We learnt lots of new vocabulary to describe materials, took part in a building challenge and learnt to make Oobleck- an interesting non-Newtonian liquid. We are so excited for our upcoming Inquiry!

Lights, Sound, Action! \Year 2 had a fantastic Immersion Day exploring and investigating different forces and energy for their new Science and Technology Inquiry 🧲🔍⚡️💡

Year 1 became Nature Explorers to 'tune into' our new Science and Technology Inquiry. We investigated creatures and habitats in the Conservation Area, planted cress and walked to Whitchurch Park for a nature hunt.

March / Mawrth 2024

Year 3 have been working with BigFoot Animations to create a stop-motion animation looking at the destruction of habitats. We are so proud of the finished film by our ethically informed citizens, which was shown to our parents at our red-carpet Oscars Ceremony!. A huge DIOLCH to Year 3 for supporting the Year 4 Charity Donation Shop 💷 Our inquiry ended with a pupil inspired charity shop and we were so happy with the support ❤️ Year 4 raised over £50 for Velindre Cancer Centre. #ethicallyinformed

As part of our Taking Action, Year 5 wrote cultural stories and read them to Reception children.

What a fabulous start to the final week of the Big Walk and Wheel, boosted by our Bike Bus. Da iawn bawb!

Year 3 worked with Big Foot Animations to create a stop-motion film, to be launched at our Oscars Ceremony in front of our parents.

Children in Years 5 and 6 'buddied' with younger pupils during World Book Day. Year 6 created Welsh comics and read them to Year 3, and then taught the younger children to use Pic Collage to make their own comics. Year 5 created digital Welsh stories and read them to Year 2; and Year 4 read the book 'Bili Broga' to Year 1 and showed them how to make Bili Broga talk using the Chatterpix app. The DigiDudes created Welsh e-books and thoroughly enjoyed sharing them with Reception. Great buddy work! Da iawn bawb!

We celebrated World Book Day by sharing our favourite books with our teachers and friends, and dressed as favourite characters from the world of books. We took part in a competition to design a book cover, which was judged by the School Council. What a difficult job they had!

Year 2 had a great day at Forest Farm! They enjoyed identifying birds, exploring trees and plants, and making tree rubbings. They even used stethoscopes to listen to the sounds inside trees!

Two members of our School Council, Megan and Logan, accompanied Mrs. Griffin to the World Book Day Charity Presentation at Tesco Extra. Thank you to all the customers who have donated to the Tesco charity book shelf and helped raise money for local schools. Diolch yn fawr to Tesco for the generous cheque for £750.00, which we will use to purchase new books for the school.

We worked very hard for our home and school Eisteddfod competitions, and took part in a range of activities, including dancing, recitation, singing, model making and photography. Llongyfarchiadau to all the individual winners, and to everyone who took part.

Llongyfarchiadau to Annabel in Year 1, who won the citywide competition to name Tesni, the dragon who is the face of a brand new website promoting the Welsh language in Cardiff, 'Our City: Our Language', which you can access below. Annabel was presented with her prize of a dragon puppet and lego by Councillor Sarah Merry during our Eisteddfod, and her whole class has been invited to visit Cardiff Castle to see Tesni in her home

February / Chwefror 2024

Our Criw Cymraeg's 'Meet and Greet', welcoming both adults and pupils with a 'bore da, sut wyt ti?' It was lovely to see so many joining in!

Llongyfarchiadau to Cherry and Fraser for representing the school in piano and recitation competitions in the Cardiff Urdd Eisteddfod. Both came first in their respective competitions! Pob lwc in the next round!

Year 2 thoroughly enjoyed their day at Cardiff Museum exploring different artists and looking at all of the fascinating artefacts, sculptures and objects 🖼️🦖🎨🦴

Diolch yn fawr to Chris and Denny from Vision for Education, pictured here presenting a cheque for £500 to Mrs. Griffin and our Year 5 Play Leaders. The money will be used to replenish our playground equipment.

Llongyfarchiadau to all the girls who made the semifinals of the Cardiff and Vale Football Championship. An amazing achievement!

We enjoyed celebrating Dydd Miwsig Cymru - Welsh Music Day. Members of the Criw Cymraeg gave presentations to the classes. Amongst other activities, Year 6 have been writing their own Welsh nursery rhymes; Year 4 made coasters; and we all learnt Welsh songs and dances.

Year 2 enjoyed an Internet Safety lesson, using the thinking hats to sort positive and negative scenarios, when using the internet. Each child read a statement aloud, then the group decided if it was positive or negative.

Taking Action: we wore Red for Wales and Velindre, supporting the Welsh team on the eve of the Six Nations Championship, and raising money and awareness for Velindre Cancer Centre.

Year 6 had a wonderful visit to Cardiff Magistrates' Court, where they met a panel of judges and were able to ask them questions. They took part in a mock trial, and had the opportunity to dress up in wigs and gowns.

January / Ionawr 2024

Year 1 welcomed two visitors to help us find out about friendship. Clare gave us a Humanist approach and Stuart a Christian perspective.

Kerbcraft training for Year 2 pupils, covering safe places to cross the road

Dydd Santes Dwynwen Hapus! Our Criw Cymraeg made and delivered Dydd Santes Dwynwen cards to every class in the school. We found out about St. Dwynwen and collaborated to tell her story in different ways.

Reception classes had a wonderful workshop with members of the Welsh National Orchestra, and Lara, one of our former pupils. They talked to us about their different instruments and inspired us to become musicians of the future!

Year 6 enjoyed a session with G-Tech, learning how to use Lego for Education. They have been building robots and programming them to move and race.

Expressive Arts Immersion Day in Reception: we explored colour mixing and created a collaborative piece of art; we explored line and shape; created a group sculpture of words associated with dragons and used the words to create group dragon poems; and explored musical instruments and how they make us think of different things.

'Tuning in' Day in Year 1: People tell stories to entertain through the Arts. We read the book 'The Dot' by Peter H. Reynolds, and were inspired to create our own Dot Artwork using different techniques. We are looking forward to exploring Music, Art and Drama to tell stories.

Year 2 enjoyed tuning into their new inquiry ‘Wildly Creative’ 🐪🐻‍❄️🎨

Year 3: Inquiry Day. We used a kahoot to test our knowledge before pond dipping in the Conservation Area. We collaborated to create posters showing different habitats and investigated the history of animation and even created our own

What incredible effort from Year 4 during our mini tuning in day for our expressive arts inquiry 🧵🪡 The class created a variety of presentations, explaining their favourite items of clothing. We then designed our own outfits, and even sorted fabrics using a Venn diagram

Year 5 launching this term's Inquiry, 'Culture is expressed in our local and global community through celebrations and festivals'.

Year 5 enjoyed a samba session as part of their Inquiry Day.

Year 6: Welsh Water came in to help us launch our Inquiry, 'Communities have a responsibility to access, share but protect resources'.

The School Council visited Cardiff Bay for a guided tour of the Senedd. They took part in a debate in the old debating chamber in Ty Hywel and took part in workshops intorducing them to voting and the deomocratic process.

December / Rhagfyr 2023

Bendigedig to our talented Year 2 violinists, some of whom have only been learning the instrument for one term, who performed a concert for Years 1 and 2! 🎶

What a wonderful, festive turnout for our Active Travel Crew's 'Bling Your Bike or Scooter for Christmas' event! Pupils were asked to decorate their bikes or scooters so that they are bright and easily visible on these dark mornings and evenings.

Bendigedig to Jessica and Liberty in Year 4 who took part in Julie Morgan MS's annual Christmas Card Competition. Jessica's design was selected as one of the three runner ups this year.

Year 1 have concluded our humanities inquiry through taking action! 1BT have donated all these toys and more to the Toy Box Project, which provides toys to families in need of support 🎄 #WPSY1

A festive Friday Bike Bus just before Christmas. We ate some mince pies and all had a chocolate decoration to hang on our bikes. Nadolig llawen!

Nadoleg Llawen: as part of Whitchurch Primary's Intergenerational Project, members of Glee Club visited Heol Don Residential Home. They performed four songs and listened to the residents sing 'We wish you a Merry Christmas'.

Year 2 really enjoyed their visit from 'Adventure Travel Cardiff'. They looked at modern day buses, and discussed how transport has changed over time.

3SH have thoroughly enjoyed this term's Design and Technology project. The children have all designed buildings which they feel Whitchurch is missing, and made prototypes of their ideas. We will have some brilliant architects in the future!

Year 2 have been exploring the question 'Why do we give gifts at Christmas?' from both a Christian and Humanist viewpoint. They enjoyed their visit from Humanists UK and found out how they celebrate Christmas

6SR thoroughly enjoyed their Food Technology week. The children had to consider rationing to make their vegetable turnovers. Lots of new skills introduced whilst preparing, making and cooking their produce. A mixed bag of evaluations judging by their faces after the taste test!

Reception children are compiling an 'Act of Kindness' Calendar this month. We have left sweets for the postman, written notes for people who look after us, made cards for our neighbours and given out special smiles on our way to and from school.

Llongyfarchiadau to our School Choir, who performed at St. Michael's Church in Tongwynlais as guests of Castell Coch Choral Society. What a fantastic evening!

Pupils in Years 4, 5 and 6 visited Bethel Baptist Church for a Christmas celebration, 'Return to Narnia'.

We are extremely proud to announce that Whitchurch Primary School has been awarded the prestigious UNICEF GOLD RIGHTS RESPECTING SCHOOLS AWARD. The Award recognises the achievement in putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child at the heart of a school's planning, policies and practice. A Rights Respecting School is a community where children's rights are learned, taught, practised, respected, protected and promoted. Da iawn, and thank you to all the pupils, parents, governors and staff who have supported us in our journey to attaining gold.

November / Tachwedd 2023 

Year 5 pupils being trained to become 'Playground Pals' by anti-bullying company Bullies Out. They have learnt the skills they need for this role through fun activities and role play. All pupils were a credit to the school.

Year 3 enjoyed constructing a Roman villa during an interactive workshop.

The Eco Committee visited Viridor Energy Recovery Facility in Cardiff Bay to find out how Cardiff's waste is disposed of and used to make roads and cement.

Year 6 took part in a workshop with Crucial Crew, learning a range of safety and life skills.

Children in Need 2023: we wore spots, stripes or something bright to school to raise money for Children in Need.

Year 5 Taking Action: bake sale in aid of UNICEF

13th - 17th November was Anti Bullying Week, and we wore odd socks to school on 14th November to celebrate our differences.

Year 4 visited Cardiff Bay and toured the Senedd, finding out about democracy and voting.

Da iawn to Sophie, who has been raising awareness of World Diabetes Day by 'Nailing It for Diabetes'.

Year 3 took a lovely windy walk around our local Whitchurch village to investigate and collect data on the types of features we have around us. We identified services which we feel could improve our community and plan to write to Julie Morgan MS to tell her what we would like to see in Whitchurch.

Members of the School Council accompanied Mrs. Griffin and Mr. Roger Haigh, one of our Governors, to lay a poppy wreath at the Cenotaph on behalf of everyone at Whitchurch Primary School. We observed a two minutes' silence and found out why we wear poppies to remember the Fallen.

2nd November was Outdoor Classroom Day, and we took part in a range of activities in the school grounds, including using compass points to locate treasure, and looking for things with different textures and then thinking of adjectives to describe what we had found.

October / Hydref 2023

Diolch yn fawr to Whitchurch Fire Station for their fantastic assembly with Years 2 and 5 on fire safety at home.

Diolch yn fawr for all your generous donations to our Harvest Assembly. Our Eco Committee will be sorting and labelling all the food before it is sent to Cardiff Foodbank to aid people who are facing crisis.

What fantastic entries in the Friends of Whitchurch Primary Pumpkin Carving and Colouring Competitions! The School Council had such a hard job to choose the winners. Bendigedig Bawb!

We wore red to school on 20th October to show our support for the 'Show Racism the Red Card' campaign. The School Council gave presentations and we created posters and poems. We are all friends together!

Our Year 6 Rugby squad took part in a festival in the Cathedral School. Bendigedig to all involved! Great attitude all round!

Year 3 investigated Roman life and times during a visit to the National Roman Legion Museum and Amphitheatre in Caerleon.

Year 6 visited the Royal Welsh Regimental Museum in Brecon to investigate daily life during World War II. They learnt about evacuation, rationing, code-breaking and taking refuge in an Anderson Shelter.

Diwrnod Shwmae Su'mae: we celebrated Wales and the Welsh language on 16th October. The School Council gave preentations about Diwrnod Shwmae, we created artwork, researched famous Welsh people and had fun learning Welsh country dancing and songs.

We were delighted to welcome our local MP, Anna McMorrin, to Whitchurch Primary. She was given a guided tour of the school, met with the School Council to talk about democracy and led an assembly.

Diolch yn fawr to Barclays Digital Eagles for the coding playground workshop with Year 4. We applied maths knowledge and programmed software to create different shapes and patterns.

We had a fantastic response when we invited our Grandparents to join us for our Macmillan Coffee Mornings! They were able to visit us in our classrooms, listen to the choir and enjoy refreshments in the Hall. We raised £490.03 for MacMillan! Diolch yn Fawr!

Transport through the Ages: Year 2 enjoyed a ride on the Brecon Mountain Railway, admired the beautiful Welsh scenery, and found out about transport in the past.

Year 1 had a wonderful trip to St. Fagans, finding out about shopping in the past, looking at old toys and using maps to explore the museum.

Expressive Arts: Year 4 enjoyed 'getting creative' with a dance workshop from EAE.

September  / Medi 2023

Year 3 had a fantastic Tuning In Day for our new Inquiry, ‘Changing Communities’. We explored the Romans and Celts and even created our own volcanoes!

Our first Bike Bus of the year, on Friday 15th September.

Our new DigiDudes had a great first meeting as we created our Avatars and discussed this week’s National Coding Week.

2022 - 2023

July / Gorfennaf 2023

Llongyfarchiadau to Kanon, winner of the Rotary Award at the Year 6 Leavers' Celebration. Kanon has overcome complex medical issues with a smile on his face, and is an inspiration to us all.

Year 6 enjoying their Leavers' trip to Heatherton.

Congratulations to our Year 6 Leavers for two fantastic productions of 'Porridge'.

Taking Action: Reception children wanted to create posters to raise awareness of the work of Guide Dogs Cymru. We are thrilled that some of our work was displayed on the Guide Dogs Cymru website.

School Council visit to the Palace of Westminster: we toured the Houses of Parliament and took part in a workshop on democracy. We saw the city from the vantage point of the London Eye and visited Downing Street and Buckingham Palace. We ended the day with a picnic tea in St. James' Park.

Year 3 took part in cookery workshops with Cook Stars Wales, and then visited Heol Don Residential Home with gifts of home-made cakes. We enjoyed singing and talking to the residents.

June / Mehefin 2023

Bendigedig to the Whitchurch Primary Rotakids, who organised a sponsored read to raise money for Guide Dogs Cymru. We raised an incredible total of £3828.70! Diolch yn fawr for all your generosity.

We had the pleasure of welcoming Rocio Cifuentes, Children’s Commissioner for Wales, to school on Friday. Rocio talked to the children about the importance of children’s rights and met with the School Council & RRS Committee to discuss how rights are upheld in Whitchurch Primary School and how we can make Wales a more rights respecting place to live.

Reception pupils enjoyed meeting the animals during their visit to Cefn Mably Farm Park.

Year 1 visited Newport Wetlands to investigate different habitats as part of this term's Inquiry, 'How Living Things Survive'. They took part in activities which included bug hunting and pond dipping.

What a fantastic visit from Dark Sky Wales, who brought their digital planetarium to help us investigate the forces involved in our solar system, the stars of the Milky Way and the distant galaxies beyond.

As a thank you for Whitchurch Primary's participation in the Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel, we had a fantastic display of cycling ksills from Fusion Extreme, showing us how practice makes perfect!

The Digital Leaders enjoyed a visit to the Harry Potter Studios.

As part of Year 4's Inquiry into Forces, we welcomed Neil from the RNLI, who talked to us about water safety.

Diolch yn fawr to Ellie and Lauren from Valley Vets, who brought a ferret, a cockatiel and a snake to Reception. We listened to their different heartbeats and found out how to care for them.

Year 3 looked at healthier alternatives to common cake ingredients in celebration of Healthy Eating Week. We then participated in market research, tasting cakes with healthier ingredients than those that are filled with chocolate.

Year 4 collaborated to design and construct Lego Moon Buggies as part of this term's Forces Inquiry.

Diolch yn fawr to Food Standards Agency Wales and the Pirates of the Chili Bean assemblies and workshops. The Captains of the HMS Chunderstorm helped us learn about food hygiene and safety ARTICLE 24: I have the right to good quality healthcare, to clean water and healthy food.

Nursery and Reception had great fun exploring the Spero Robots: we programmed them to make them move forwards and backwards and change colour.

Diolch yn fawr to Mrs. Saleh from Whitchurch High DT Department, who guided Year 6 pupils in creating geodomes.

Year 2 had a fantastic time exploring pneumatics. They collaborated to design and make pneumatic monsters.

Diolch yn fawr to the Friends of Whitchurch Primary, who funded workshops and assemblies from The Code Show. Gary discussed how important coding is int he wider world, and brought in a range of amazing 1980's technology for us to explore. He explained the importance of problem solving, mathematics and resilience when playing or coding games.

STEM Activities in Year 1: we planted sunflower seeds, and will use our measuring skills to find out how much they grow over the next few weeksl we used non standard units to measure and compare the length of objects and ourselves; we used a variety of joining techniques to attach our structures together when making bug homes; we discovered scientific facts about bees and used our IT skills to show what we have learnt; and we continued problem solving in Maths.

Materials and their Properties: Year 3 worked collaboratively to create box girder bridges by welding chocolate, and compared the strength of the plank bridge of chocolate to our box girder inventions. We worked with Mrs. Hembury in Forest Schools (toasting marshmallows and making smoors) to learn about fire safety and reversible and irreversible change

Year 5 visited Whitchurch High School and familiarised themselves with CAD software. They designed keyrings using Techsoft, and these were created using a laser cutter. Diolch yn fawr to Mrs. Saleh!

May / Mai 2023

Our Criw Cymraeg is delighted to announce that Whitchurch Primary School has achieved the Silver Siarter Iaith Award, which promotes the Welsh language, develops a Welsh ethos and encourages children to improve their Welsh language skills. Bendigedig Bawb!

Our second Bike Bus took place this morning, starting from Whitchurch Tennis Club. Diolch yn fawr to everyone who took part.

Our RotaKids hosted a special assembly to launch their Community Project, raising funds for Guide Dogs Cymru, the chosen charity of Cardiff Lord Mayor Graham Hinchey. The Lord Mayor introduced several guide dogs and their owners to the children and urged everyone to take part in the RotaKids Sponsored Read on 30th June.

April and Bethan, two of our RotaKids, visited the Lord Mayor's Mansion House with Miss Butler and Mr. Clarke. They enjoyed a tour of the building and had the chance to meet the Lord Mayor, together with staff and children from other schools. The visit is in aid of the upcoming charity work the RotaKids will be carrying out to raise money for Guide Dogs Cymru.

We celebrated Seren a Sbarc Day by singing and dancing to the song, making puppets and posters.

The annual URDD message of peace and goodwill - Neges heddwch ac Ewyllys da - which this year is Galw. Nhw. Allan. - Call. Them. Out. It is a call from the youth of Wales to stamp out racism. Watch our Criw Cymraeg reading out the message. #heddwch2023 #SiarteriaithWPS

Sports Day in the Sunshine: Green House / Ty Gwyrdd was the overall winner for Years 3 and 4; and White House / Ty Gwyn was the winner for Years 5 and 6. Llongyfarchiadau to everyone who took part.

Year 4 had a wonderful time at their Residential at Call of the Wild. You can find more photos of their adventures in the Call of the Wild section of this website.

Year 4 pupils who didn't attend the Residential have been busy doing a range of activities in Forest School. A big thank you to Mrs. Bushen who taught us how to whittle a stick in preparation for toasting our marshmallows! We loved the marshmallows and hot chocolate around the camp fire!

Some of the Year 4 children visited Cardiff Castle for a fantastic medieval workshop and a tour of the castle, keep, battlements and WWII bomb shelters within the castle walls.

What a fantastic turn out for the Bike It Breakfast! Thank you to everyone who took part. and special thanks to the Active Travel Crew who had an exciting time making smoothies using energy generated by pedalling the bike!

What a wonderful response to our Bring a Plant to School Day! Thank you to everyone for your generosity and support. Our school looks wonderful, and the children thoroughly enjoyed planting flowers, cuttings and vegetables!

April / Ebrill 2023

Year 2 took part in workshops with 'Size of Wales' and learnt about the rainforest and how important it it to protect it.

Blwyddyn 5 and 6 enjoyed hosting Aim High Poetry Workshops with author Debra Bertulis, and produced some wonderful work.

We celebrated Earth Day on April 22nd and the Eco Committee gave presentations to each class about the importance of protecting our beautiful world.

Year 6 took part in a Drama Workshop with the Kinetic School of Performing Arts and used their imagination to create stories without using dialogue.

Year 6 designed and constructed flood-proof houses for a village in Bangladesh. They applied their knowledge of what makes an effective structure and of flood-proof materials and really enjoyed working collaboratively on this project. They tested their structures by flooding them in our outdoor learning environment.

Lights, Sound, Action! Year 2 pupils enjoyed exploring forces whilst tuning into their new inquiry ‘Forces and energy impact our lives and the world around us.’ 🌎 💥

'Animal Magic' Immersion Day in Reception, introducing this term's topic. We met Teddy the Cockapoo, Manny and Moose, the school guinea-pigs; and became vets for the day!

Year 1 Inquiry Day: 'All living things have important needs that help them grow and survive'.

Year 4 had a wonderful day 'tuning in' to their new topic, exploring all things 'forces' and making their own rockets!

International Languages Day: we investigated different countries and cultures, tried traditional foods and made national flags.

Da iawn to our talented violinists who were invited to perform at a lunchtime concert at the Royal College of Music and Drama during the ESTA Conferenece.

March / Mawrth 2023

Year 5 Taking Action: they collaborated with Reception to conclude their Expressive Arts Inquiry. Blwyddyn Pump have written cultural stories with a moral, which they published and read to their 'Reception Buddy'. Reception performed a variety of songs and dances and showed off their creative headbands and Chinese Dragon. Gwaith da, pawb!

Year 3 visited Bethel Baptist Church to experience 'An Easter Carol'.

Year 2 had a wonderful time visiting Ararat Church for the Great Hot Cross Bun Hunt.

Year 6 welcomed Stacey from Flat Holm, who talked to them about how the Island is eco-friendly. The children solved problems to make their own wind turbines.

Year 4 had an amazing session working with Sust Fash Wales, learning about the exploitation of garment workers in Cambodia. We decorated organic cotton with messages to support them.

Year 5 visit to Bethesda Church for an Easter Workshop.

What wonderful entries in the Friends of Whitchurch Primary Easter Bonnet Competition: the School Council had a very difficult job to choose the winners. Bendigedig Bawb!

Year 6 visited Bethesda Church for an Easter workshop.

Sust Fash Wales visited Year 4 to discuss the environmental and social issues of chemical dyes. We used natural dyes to tie-dye some organic cotton.

World Maths Day Activities in Reception: quizzes, Maths songs, dancing to numbers and making jigsaws!

Llongyfarchiadau to Fraser, Niamh and Polly, who represented Whitchurch Primary School in the annual Howells Public Speaking Competition. They were fantastic, and came second overall. Bendigedig bawb!

Bendigedig to all the young musicians who took part in the CCVG Music Showcase Concert in St. David's Hall: what wonderful performances from everyone!

We wore odd socks to school to raise money for Comic Relief on 17th March, and the School Council gave presentations about the fundraising initiative to their classmates.

As part of the 2B Enterprising educational programme for Primary Schools, a scientist from Cansford Laboratories visited 2KD to help introduce the children to possible STEM careers and opportunities.

The Eco Committee organised a Book Swap for children in Progression Step 3. Pupils brought a book they no longer wanted to keep to school, and were able to exchange it for another on World Book Day.

We celebrated World Book Day on 10th March by dressing as book characters and bringing our favourite books to school to share with our friends and teachers.

Diolch yn fawr to the members of the Welsh National Orchestra who visited our Reception pupils.

Llongyfarchiadau to Lowri, Abigail and Joel who took part in the World Scholar’s Cup at Howell’s School. They completed a set of challenging tasks and debates, and Abigail was named as Best Debator.

Diolch yn fawr to Mrs. Bonaccorsi who came to Year 4 to talk about her work as a costume designer. We were very inspired by her presentation and loved trying on some of her creations!

Some of the Rotakids met with staff and pupils of Bumatofu Primary School in Uganda via a Teams link. The Rotakids were thanked for the money raised at the Christmas Fair, which had been used to help pay for solar panels to ensure that they have a light in each classroom.

February / Chwefror 2023

We were honoured to welcome Paul Orders, Chief Executive of Cardiff Council, and Mike Tate, Deputy Director of Education. Members of the School Senedd spoke about their roles and responsibilities; and the School Council presented their project on the Four Purposes.

Bendigedig to our Boys and Girls Football Teams, who both performed brilliantly at the Urdd Cardiff and Vale Football Tournament, with the Girls winning the competiton. They were congratulated next day by Paul Orders, Chief Executive, Mike Tate, Deputy Director of Education and Jonathan Morgan, Chair of Governors.

We took part in 'Wear Red for Wales and Velindre' on the eve of this year's Six Nations Championships. Pupils and staff wore something red to school and brought a suggested donation of £1.00 towards Velindre Cancer Charity. We raised a fantastic total of £518.00. Diolch yn fawr!

As part of this term's Inquiry, 'Patterns Help Us Understand the World', Year 2 investigated different animals, habitats and camouflage with the help of 'Wild Science' workshops.

Dydd Miwsig Cymru: we celebrated Welsh Music Day by singing and dancing along to our favourite Welsh songs. Dathlwyn Diwrnod Miwsig Cymru drwy wrando ar llawer o gerddoriaeth Cymreig.

Year 1 took part in workshops based around the Gwalia Stores in St. Fagans National Museum of History. We met Mrs. Jones, a shop assistant from the 1920's and found out what products were available to buy in shops a century ago.

We took part in a range of age-appropriate activities to mark Safer Internet Day on 7th February. Reception listened to the Adventures of Smartie the Penguin and made posters to help him stay safe online; Year 1 listened to Hanni's Story to learn about what to do if something goes wrong online; Year 2 discussed ways of keeping alert and staying safe; Year 4 made presentations about the Rings of Responsibility of a digital citizen; Year 5 explored different internet scenarios and talked about dealing with them safely and responsibly.

January / Ionawr 2023

The School Council visited the Senedd in Cardiff Bay, where they took part in group activities focusing on democracy, a debate in the old debating chamber in Ty Hywel and enjoyed a guided tour of the Senedd.

Some of our talented Year 2 pupils represented Whitchurch Primary at the Rubicon Schools Dance Festival at St. David's Hall. What a fantastic performance on the theme of 'Space'! Bendigedig Bawb!

Diwrnod Santes Dwynwen Hapus: We found out about St. Dwynwen (the Welsh patron saint of lovers), created artwork and the Criw Cymraeg made cards to send to each class in the school.

Nursery Immersion Day: Investigating Materials. We explored Nursery Rhymes using different materials, made Mary Mary's garden-inspired biscuits, Humpty Dumpty collages and models, and explored plants and flowers.

Reception Immersion Day: An invitation to..... We created paintings in the style of Jackson Pollack, looked at Aboriginal Art, made our own pointillism paintings and listened to musical performances.

Year 1 Inquiry: we have been looking at how everything changes over time. We walked around Whitchurch Village to find old and new buildings, and welcomed a very special visitor, Mrs. Gulliford, who talked to us about some of the toys and games of her childhood.

Year 2 Immersion Day: we enjoyed a 'Wildly Creative' day to launch our Expressive Arts Inquiry, 'Patterns help us understand the World'.

Year 3 Expressive Arts Inquiry: Digital Media influences our Lives, Actions and Emotions.

Year 4 Immersion Day: we researched fashion from countries throughout the world, investigated European countries and compared traditional clothing. We ended with a fashion show to cultural music.

Year 5 Immersion Day: we explored a range of cultures, celebrations and festivals, investigating Venetian carnival masks, samba music from Brazil and Canadian landscape artist Ted Harrison. We are really looking forward to getting creative in our new Expressive Arts Inquiry!

Year 6 Immersion Day: we investigated Global Warning and the negative impact of greenhouse gases; and explored molecular compounds. We even constructed chemical models out of sweets!

December / Rhagfyr 2022

We were so thrilled to be able to invite our Mums and Dads to our Christmas concerts and Nativities this year. We hope that you enjoyed them!

We hope that our parents enjoyed our Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 Carol Concerts at Ararat Church: it was wonderful to be able to welcome you to watch us this year. 5SR's Christmas rendition of Lewis Capaldi's 'Forget Me' was even played on Josh and Kelly's show on Capital Radio!

Our Rotakids met with representatives from Cardiff Rotay and PONT (Partnership Overseas Networking Trust) and presented a cheque for £419.95, representing funds raised at the Christmas Fair. The money will be donated to Bumatofu School in Uganda.

Our Year 5 and 6 Choir sang Christmas Carols to shoppers in Tesco on Western Avenue.

What a wonderful performance from our Year 3 and 4 Choir at St. Michael's Church, Tongwynlais, as guests of the Castell Coch Choral Society. Thank you to Mrs. Linda Morgan who conducts our choir, and to all our parents and friends who attended the service to support us.

November / Tachwedd 2022

Year 6 pupils took part in 'Crucial Crew' workshops at the Field Hospital in Llandaff, where they learnt a range of essential safety and PHSE skills.

Be Bright, Be Seen: as the clocks have gone back and the nights are drawing in, our Active Travel Crew held a 'Be Bright, Be Seen' Fashion Show, highlighting the importance of being visible to other road users when walking, cycling or scooting to school. Diolch yn fawr to Sustrans for the prizes.

Diolch yn fawr to Chris from Coed Caerdydd for helping us plant our new cherry trees outside the Year 4 area.

We raised awareness of Anti-Bullying Week by wearing odd socks to celebrate our uniqueness. Every child has rights, whatever their ethnicity, gender, religion, language, abilities or any other status.

Year 5 Inquiry: we visited Cadbury World, where we learnt about John Cadbury and the impact he had on factory workers in the Victorian Era.

Year 4 Inquiry and Investigation: we had lots of fun on our walk around Cardiff Bay. We followed the routes we had planned ourselves, took photos of key landmarks, edited them in class and uploaded them to a world map.

We were very excited to welcome Mr. Urdd to Whitchurch Primary to celebrate Wales playing in the World Cup. We practised our own football skills and are looking forward to cheering on Gareth Bale and his team.

We held a non-uniform day in aid of Children in Need, when pupils and staff wore spots, stripes and bright colours. We raised a total of £531.14 - diolch yn fawr! Members of the School Council gave presentations about Children in Need to their classmates.

Year 5 Taking Action! We planned and organised a Cake Sale to raise funds for Unicef, Diolch yn fawr for your generosity - we raised a fantastic total of £790.00!

Members of the School Council accompanied Mrs. Griffin and Mrs. Rowlands to the Cenotaph to lay a poppy wreath on behalf of all at Whitchurch Primary School.

We learnt the significance of Remembrance Day. We observed a two minutes' silence and found out why we wear poppies to remember the Fallen. We also used a range of materials and techniques to create our own poppies. The Royal British Legion was delighted with the amount of £177.53 we raised from the sale of poppies - diolch yn fawr!

October / Hydref 2022

We celebrated Wales and the Welsh language on Diwrnod Shwmae Su'mae on 15th October. The School Council gave presentations, we created artwork, researched famous Welsh people and had fun learning Welsh country dancing and songs.

We took part in a range of relaxing activities to mark World Mental Health Day, and our School Council gave presentations to our classes.

Da iawn to all the children and staff who cycled or scooted to school during the week 10th - 14th October.

Washday with Marged: Reception children visited St. Fagans National Museum of History and helped Marged wash her clothes with a mangle and dolly.

Year 4 had a wonderful trip to Rhondda Heritage Park. We explored the mine, created our own miner's helmets and took part in a coal investigation.

Transport Connects Communities: Year 2 visited the Brecon Mountain Railway. We enjoyed our ride on the steam train, admired the fabulous views and found out about transport in the past.

We had a fantastic response when we invited our Grandparents to join us for a Macmillan Coffee Morning! They were able to visit us in our classrooms, listen to the Choir and enjoy refreshments in the Hall. We raised £621.60 for MacMillan! Diolch yn fawr!

Pupils and staff wore red to raise awareness of the 'Show Racism the Red Card' campaign. We talked about being kind to everyone and said 'NO' to racism! The School Council gave presentations and we wrote poems.

September / Medi 2022

Year 6 visited the Royal Welsh Regimental Museum in Brecon. They investigated daily life during World War II and learnt about evacuation, rationing, code-breaking and taking refuge in an Anderson Shelter.

Year 5 became Victorian schoolchildren for the day during a visit to St. Fagans National Museum of History. We had lessons in a Victorian classroom and played Victorian games in the playground.

Year 4 Inquiry: we used our compasses and map skills to find different features and areas of the school.

Year 3 investigated Roman life and times during a visit to the National Roman Legion Museum and Amphitheatre in Caerleon.

'Transport Connects Communities': Year 2 'tuned into' our new Inquiry by exploring different types of transport and collecting data from our local area. We are looking forward to investigating how transport has changed over time.

Year 1 launched this term's Inquiry, 'Just Imagine...' with an Expressive Arts Day.
