Year 5 enjoying the Urdd Tag Rugby festival on Barry Island beach π ποΈ
Members of our School Council and Criw Cymraeg have spent an exciting day in London. They toured the Palace of Westminster, enjoyed identifying landmarks from the London Eye, walked around Westminster and to Buckingham Palace and had a picnic tea in St. Jamesβ Park.

The Active Travel Crew celebrated a year of promoting cycling, walking and scooting by going on a 16k bike ride to the Secret Garden cafe.

What a fantastic joint Bike Bus with Ysgol Melin Gruffydd from the Common!
STEM Week: Year 1 designed and made butterfly shooters. We tested them and discussed what improvements we could make; and used our maths to measure how far they could fly and worked out the difference. We made bird feeders to find out what kind of birds eat different foods and how long it takes for each feeder to be eaten. We visited the IT Suite and learnt about the different components in a computer system. We used Microsoft Word to change the colour, size and font of our typing, and found out how to save our work.
STEM Week: Year 2 designed and created pneumatic monsters, and enjoyed a Minecraft workshop from Mi Little Pad. Diolch yn fawr to Vincent from Outright Games for talking to us about making videogames - we were fascinated to find out how many people are involved and what their roles are. We were inspired to start designing our own games!
STEM Week: Year 3 took part in a wonderful Scratch workshop from Technocamps, creating our own game of cat and mouse by programming different blocks. We baked cakes with missing ingredients to understand what happens when you mix materials and the importance pf using correct measurements. We learnt the difference between reversible and irreversible changes by toasting marshmallows on the fire in the outside classroom.
STEM Week: Year 4 made foil boats for use in their buoyancy experiments and constructed seismometers to measure earthquakes. We found the perimeter and area of different shapes on the playground. We enjoyed using microbits with Technocamps.
STEM Week: Technocamps visited Year 5 and helped us use our Lego Spike kits to program the rhinos we had created. We used stop motion to create our own animations, and investigated architecture and structures using spaghetti and marshmallows! With the help of RAF engineer Sergeant Damian Parr, we completed team challenges building shelters, communication towers and fitness. We also carried out an investigation, 'How do leaves adapt depending on where they grow?' We predicted, hunted for leaves, measured the length, width, mean and area.
STEM Week: diolch yn fawr to Cardiff University for teaching Year 6 about HTML and helping us to create our own webpages. They also showed us the importance of having fresh air, plenty of light and comfortable temperatures. We compared different areas of the classroom and talked about the impact energy has on the environment.

Year 1 releasing the butterflies they have watched transform from caterpillars.
Year 3 Shoreline Safari at Porthkerry Park. We sorted natural and manmade materials found on the beach, and learnt how long different materials take to biodegrade. We even found some fossils, explored the nature trail and identified local wildlife.
Some of our Year 2 Young Engineers represented Whitchurch Primary School at the Stadler Rail Project in Sophia Gardens. Bendigedig to everyone, especially our two winners!

The Criw Cymraeg is delighted to announce that Whitchurch Primary has been awarded the Gold Siarter Iaith Award! This Award is a project introduced by the Welsh Assembly to all schools in Wales to promote the Welsh language, to develop a Welsh ethos and to encourage pupils to improve their Welsh language skills. We are very proud to be one of the few Cardiff schools to achieve the Gold Award!

Year 5 took part in a tag rugby festival at Whitchurch High School, along with the other feeder schools.
Zoolab visit to Year 5 to talk about animal classifications and adaptations. We met a mix of vertebrates and invertebrates!

A fantastic, happy, joyful way to travel to school! We really enjoyed our first joint bike bus with Melin Gruffydd
Year 1 investigating different habitats and exploring pond life in Newport Wetlands as part of this term's Inquiry.
Year 3 have been learning about the different types of rocks - sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous. We applied our scientific knowledge when using starbursts as sediment to create models of these different rock types!

Outdoor Learning Week
Evelyn in 5SJ presented to her class during Allergy Awareness Week.
Annabel in BT won the city-wide competition to name Tesni the Dragon, and her class enjoyed a visit to Castell Caerdydd where they met Tesni. They discovered that the family who lived in the castle loved animals and created rooms full of beautifully painted animals! They learnt about knights and dressed up in armour!
What a wonderful response to our 'Bring a Plant to School Day', organised by our Eco Committee! Our school grounds look wonderful! Diolch yn fawr to all the parents and grandparents who helped the children with their planting.
A fantastic turnout for our first Bike Bus of the Summer Term.
The Criw Cymraeg was delighted to welcome Welsh artist Rhys Padarn Jones, and loved working with him to paint a new mural for Whitchurch Primary School.
Reception children thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Cefn Mably Farm Park in support of this term's Inquiry. We found out about the farm animals, learnt how to handle and feed them, and took a train ride around the farm
Some of our Year 5 pupils took part in a workshop by the English Speaking Union hosted by Howells School. Da iawn bawb!
International Languages Day Activities: RBM have enjoyed learning about India from Haroon.We painted the Indian flag and learnt to count to 5 in Urdu-shukriya. Year 3 learnt about France, creating our own pieces of Monet and tasting Pain au chocolat, which proved very popular. Year 2 enjoyed some Spanish food, created mosaics inspired by Antoni Gaudi, and even tried flamenco dancing. Year 1 investigated Italy, making pizzas, painting flags, creating mosaics and constructing buildings. We counted in Italian and sang nursery rhymes.
The Year 4 rugby squad represented Whitchurch with pride and determination, thoroughly enjoying the competitive spirit and getting covered in mud along the way! Da iawn bawb! π
Year 6 enjoyed workshops with traditional Welsh storyteller and author Daniel Morden.
Year 4 Immersion Day exploring friction through a variety of experiments!
Year 3 had so much fun on their Tuning In Day investigating 'Marvellous Materials'. We learnt lots of new vocabulary to describe materials, took part in a building challenge and learnt to make Oobleck- an interesting non-Newtonian liquid. We are so excited for our upcoming Inquiry!
Lights, Sound, Action! \Year 2 had a fantastic Immersion Day exploring and investigating different forces and energy for their new Science and Technology Inquiry π§²πβ‘οΈπ‘
Year 1 became Nature Explorers to 'tune into' our new Science and Technology Inquiry. We investigated creatures and habitats in the Conservation Area, planted cress and walked to Whitchurch Park for a nature hunt.

Year 3 have been working with BigFoot Animations to create a stop-motion animation looking at the destruction of habitats. We are so proud of the finished film by our ethically informed citizens, which was shown to our parents at our red-carpet Oscars Ceremony!. A huge DIOLCH to Year 3 for supporting the Year 4 Charity Donation Shop π· Our inquiry ended with a pupil inspired charity shop and we were so happy with the support β€οΈ Year 4 raised over Β£50 for Velindre Cancer Centre. #ethicallyinformed
As part of our Taking Action, Year 5 wrote cultural stories and read them to Reception children.

Year 3 worked with Big Foot Animations to create a stop-motion film, to be launched at our Oscars Ceremony in front of our parents.

Children in Years 5 and 6 'buddied' with younger pupils during World Book Day. Year 6 created Welsh comics and read them to Year 3, and then taught the younger children to use Pic Collage to make their own comics. Year 5 created digital Welsh stories and read them to Year 2; and Year 4 read the book 'Bili Broga' to Year 1 and showed them how to make Bili Broga talk using the Chatterpix app. The DigiDudes created Welsh e-books and thoroughly enjoyed sharing them with Reception. Great buddy work! Da iawn bawb!
We celebrated World Book Day by sharing our favourite books with our teachers and friends, and dressed as favourite characters from the world of books. We took part in a competition to design a book cover, which was judged by the School Council. What a difficult job they had!
Year 2 had a great day at Forest Farm! They enjoyed identifying birds, exploring trees and plants, and making tree rubbings. They even used stethoscopes to listen to the sounds inside trees!

Two members of our School Council, Megan and Logan, accompanied Mrs. Griffin to the World Book Day Charity Presentation at Tesco Extra. Thank you to all the customers who have donated to the Tesco charity book shelf and helped raise money for local schools. Diolch yn fawr to Tesco for the generous cheque for Β£750.00, which we will use to purchase new books for the school.

Annabel was presented with her prize of a dragon puppet and lego by Councillor Sarah Merry during our Eisteddfod, and her whole class has been invited to visit Cardiff Castle to see Tesni in her home

Year 2 thoroughly enjoyed their day at Cardiff Museum exploring different artists and looking at all of the fascinating artefacts, sculptures and objects πΌοΈπ¦π¨π¦΄

We enjoyed celebrating Dydd Miwsig Cymru - Welsh Music Day. Members of the Criw Cymraeg gave presentations to the classes. Amongst other activities, Year 6 have been writing their own Welsh nursery rhymes; Year 4 made coasters; and we all learnt Welsh songs and dances.

Year 2 enjoyed an Internet Safety lesson, using the thinking hats to sort positive and negative scenarios, when using the internet. Each child read a statement aloud, then the group decided if it was positive or negative.
Taking Action: we wore Red for Wales and Velindre, supporting the Welsh team on the eve of the Six Nations Championship, and raising money and awareness for Velindre Cancer Centre.
Year 6 had a wonderful visit to Cardiff Magistrates' Court, where they met a panel of judges and were able to ask them questions. They took part in a mock trial, and had the opportunity to dress up in wigs and gowns.

Year 1 welcomed two visitors to help us find out about friendship. Clare gave us a Humanist approach and Stuart a Christian perspective.
Kerbcraft training for Year 2 pupils, covering safe places to cross the road
Dydd Santes Dwynwen Hapus! Our Criw Cymraeg made and delivered Dydd Santes Dwynwen cards to every class in the school. We found out about St. Dwynwen and collaborated to tell her story in different ways.
Reception classes had a wonderful workshop with members of the Welsh National Orchestra, and Lara, one of our former pupils. They talked to us about their different instruments and inspired us to become musicians of the future!
Year 6 enjoyed a session with G-Tech, learning how to use Lego for Education. They have been building robots and programming them to move and race.

Expressive Arts Immersion Day in Reception: we explored colour mixing and created a collaborative piece of art; we explored line and shape; created a group sculpture of words associated with dragons and used the words to create group dragon poems; and explored musical instruments and how they make us think of different things.
'Tuning in' Day in Year 1: People tell stories to entertain through the Arts. We read the book 'The Dot' by Peter H. Reynolds, and were inspired to create our own Dot Artwork using different techniques. We are looking forward to exploring Music, Art and Drama to tell stories.

Year 3: Inquiry Day. We used a kahoot to test our knowledge before pond dipping in the Conservation Area. We collaborated to create posters showing different habitats and investigated the history of animation and even created our own
What incredible effort from Year 4 during our mini tuning in day for our expressive arts inquiry π§΅πͺ‘ The class created a variety of presentations, explaining their favourite items of clothing. We then designed our own outfits, and even sorted fabrics using a Venn diagram
Year 5 launching this term's Inquiry, 'Culture is expressed in our local and global community through celebrations and festivals'.
Year 5 enjoyed a samba session as part of their Inquiry Day.
Year 6: Welsh Water came in to help us launch our Inquiry, 'Communities have a responsibility to access, share but protect resources'.
The School Council visited Cardiff Bay for a guided tour of the Senedd. They took part in a debate in the old debating chamber in Ty Hywel and took part in workshops intorducing them to voting and the deomocratic process.

What a wonderful, festive turnout for our Active Travel Crew's 'Bling Your Bike or Scooter for Christmas' event! Pupils were asked to decorate their bikes or scooters so that they are bright and easily visible on these dark mornings and evenings.
Bendigedig to Jessica and Liberty in Year 4 who took part in Julie Morgan MS's annual Christmas Card Competition. Jessica's design was selected as one of the three runner ups this year.
Year 1 have concluded our humanities inquiry through taking action! 1BT have donated all these toys and more to the Toy Box Project, which provides toys to families in need of support π #WPSY1

Nadoleg Llawen: as part of Whitchurch Primary's Intergenerational Project, members of Glee Club visited Heol Don Residential Home. They performed four songs and listened to the residents sing 'We wish you a Merry Christmas'.
Year 2 really enjoyed their visit from 'Adventure Travel Cardiff'. They looked at modern day buses, and discussed how transport has changed over time.
3SH have thoroughly enjoyed this term's Design and Technology project. The children have all designed buildings which they feel Whitchurch is missing, and made prototypes of their ideas. We will have some brilliant architects in the future!
Year 2 have been exploring the question 'Why do we give gifts at Christmas?' from both a Christian and Humanist viewpoint. They enjoyed their visit from Humanists UK and found out how they celebrate Christmas
6SR thoroughly enjoyed their Food Technology week. The children had to consider rationing to make their vegetable turnovers. Lots of new skills introduced whilst preparing, making and cooking their produce. A mixed bag of evaluations judging by their faces after the taste test!
Reception children are compiling an 'Act of Kindness' Calendar this month. We have left sweets for the postman, written notes for people who look after us, made cards for our neighbours and given out special smiles on our way to and from school.

Pupils in Years 4, 5 and 6 visited Bethel Baptist Church for a Christmas celebration, 'Return to Narnia'.
We are extremely proud to announce that Whitchurch Primary School has been awarded the prestigious UNICEF GOLD RIGHTS RESPECTING SCHOOLS AWARD. The Award recognises the achievement in putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child at the heart of a school's planning, policies and practice. A Rights Respecting School is a community where children's rights are learned, taught, practised, respected, protected and promoted. November / Tachwedd 2023
Year 5 pupils being trained to become 'Playground Pals' by anti-bullying company Bullies Out. They have learnt the skills they need for this role through fun activities and role play. All pupils were a credit to the school.

The Eco Committee visited Viridor Energy Recovery Facility in Cardiff Bay to find out how Cardiff's waste is disposed of and used to make roads and cement.
Year 6 took part in a workshop with Crucial Crew, learning a range of safety and life skills.

13th - 17th November was Anti Bullying Week, and we wore odd socks to school on 14th November to celebrate our differences.
Year 4 visited Cardiff Bay and toured the Senedd, finding out about democracy and voting.
Da iawn to Sophie, who has been raising awareness of World Diabetes Day by 'Nailing It for Diabetes'.
Year 3 took a lovely windy walk around our local Whitchurch village to investigate and collect data on the types of features we have around us. We identified services which we feel could improve our community and plan to write to Julie Morgan MS to tell her what we would like to see in Whitchurch.
Members of the School Council accompanied Mrs. Griffin and Mr. Roger Haigh, one of our Governors, to lay a poppy wreath at the Cenotaph on behalf of everyone at Whitchurch Primary School. We observed a two minutes' silence and found out why we wear poppies to remember the Fallen.

2nd November was Outdoor Classroom Day, and we took part in a range of activities in the school grounds, including using compass points to locate treasure, and looking for things with different textures and then thinking of adjectives to describe what we had found.

Diolch yn fawr to Whitchurch Fire Station for their fantastic assembly with Years 2 and 5 on fire safety at home.
Diolch yn fawr for all your generous donations to our Harvest Assembly. Our Eco Committee will be sorting and labelling all the food before it is sent to Cardiff Foodbank to aid people who are facing crisis.
What fantastic entries in the Friends of Whitchurch Primary Pumpkin Carving and Colouring Competitions! The School Council had such a hard job to choose the winners. Bendigedig Bawb!
We wore red to school on 20th October to show our support for the 'Show Racism the Red Card' campaign. The School Council gave presentations and we created posters and poems. We are all friends together!
